October 22nd, 2026
As you are all now aware, the Colorado League made the difficult decision, in concert with Colorado Mountain College, to postpone this weekend’s State Championship race due to the forecasted weather that is currently and will impact the area.
For the past 10 days, I have been watching the weather forecast and this morning a decision had to be made with many factors in mind.
1) In speaking with Colorado Mountain College, their facilities would be negatively impacted by holding the event this weekend. Their soccer fields and trails would suffer significant damage in wet conditions. As for the trails, the soil contains Bentonite Clay. When this soil becomes wet it absorbs vast amounts of water, becoming extremely sticky, heavy, and slick. Those who have ridden the Spring Valley Trail System in wet conditions know this firsthand. Some of you experienced the negative result from the small amount of rain and wet conditions during the Spring Valley Scramble pre-ride earlier this season.
2) Over the past 48 hours, the area has received moisture and the soil in the camping area is currently soft and becoming muddy. In 2022, we experienced rain and snow that resulted in vehicles stuck in the camping area. One vehicle required a tow truck to remove it from the field. This land is managed by Roaring Fork Schools and is rented by the Colorado League and Roaring Fork Cycling. Given the weather forecast, we cannot guarantee that vehicles would be able to access or exit this property.
3) If the Colorado League were to host a race this coming weekend with the forecasted weather, there is the possibility that races would be cancelled entirely, or results would be decided on a shortened race or course evacuation. Neither scenario is ideal for a State Championship event.
4) The Colorado League explored the option of relocating to a different host community. This is not a viable option given the timeline for permits, key vendors, event support, etc. In addition, this option would not alleviate the financial implications of a change. If anything, it may be more costly on coaches, parents, and student-athletes.
5) The Colorado League wants to be sure that we do not cancel the State Championship event. We believe that a postponement is better than a cancellation.
6) The Colorado League wants to ensure the integrity and safety of the event, as well as the race experience for all those involved.
We understand the weight of this decision and its financial implications. We are experiencing these effects as well.
We understand that coaches, families, and student-athletes may now need to decide between participating in the State Championships and their other commitments. If a student-athlete decides not to attend the rescheduled State Championships, then they should contact registration@coloradomtb.org for a refund.
For any qualified riders who did not previously register for States, registration will open today at 5pm and will close on Monday, October 26th at noon. We will continue to update the registered rider list, and call-up lists will be posted on Tuesday, October 27th.
As with all significant issues facing the League, we lean on the professionalism of our coaches to communicate with their families and student-athletes.
Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you in Glenwood Springs next weekend.
