2017 COACHES SUMMIT

The Colorado High School Cycling League’s annual Coaches’ Summit brings together coaches, assistant coaches, ride leaders, and parent volunteers—both new and experienced—to develop skills and knowledge, share strategies, and build community. This conference promotes a holistic approach to coaching that creates an environment in which young people can grow and thrive. This is a great opportunity to spend a weekend in the company of peers and energize for the upcoming season.

Classes cover the nuts and bolts of working with high school student athletes in the context of a NICA mountain bike club and provide the basic knowledge all NICA Coaches should be aware of and incorporating into their program. Classes include topics like Recruiting, Training, Fundraising, and Risk Management.

Classroom Seminars: Classes cover the nuts and bolts of working with high school student athletes in the context of a NICA mountain bike club and provide the basic knowledge and guidance for Coaches.

Class topics include How to Start and Manage a team, Fundraising, and Risk Management.

MTB 101: Learn the Skills to Teach the Skills with Andy Clark, NICA Skills Trainer, Ciclismo Youth Foundation Director, Veteran Colorado League Coach. In this clinic, coaches will learn the progressive steps needed to teach anyone (even yourself) both basic and advanced mountain biking skills. You will learn experiential teaching techniques, how to accommodate different learning styles, and how to create a positive learning environment for young riders. Most of this workshop is experiential and on the bike, so please bring your bike and appropriate riding and safety gear for the weather.

Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships are available. Please submit your scholarship application by April 1st.

Coach Licensure: Attend both days to receive Level 3 License required professional development units (PDUs). Sunday meets the required PDUs for Level 2 License. Team compliance for registration discount involves a minimum license requirements based on number of years in existence: Team Compliance Coach License Requirements.

Prerequisite Onboarding Training.  Required training to be completed before Leaders’ Summit

Team compliance for registration discount involves a minimum license requirement based on the number of years the team has existed:
Year 1 – Coach Level 1
Year 2 – Coach Level 2
Year 3 –  Coach Level 3

  • 2-days, Saturday and Sunday, all welcome Friday evening, $250
  • 1-day only, $145 
  • Half day, Saturday or Sunday, $75
  • Basic First Aid/CPR, $25
  • CPR/CPR Recert, $15
  • WFA Recert, $30 for those with 16-hr WFA certification that expired in 2016 or will expire in 2017

Note: Course participants will be provided with relevant materials and the NICA Coaches Manual. For those planning on participating in the skills clinic and/or optional trail ride, you must have a helmet and a functioning mountain bike. Bring a water bottle and appropriate clothes. Snacks and lunch will be provided. You will receive a confirmation email and registration form upon receipt of payment.

Saturday seminars cover the nuts and bolts of working with high school student athletes in the context of a NICA mountain bike club. Seminar topics include those requested by veteran coaches and applicable to all Head Coaches/Team Directors, Level 1-3 Coaches. The NICA coach license program is designed to ensure that all coaches are sufficiently knowledgeable so as to be a positive influence on all NICA riders. Sunday, April 23: 1-day Level 2 Coach License with First Aid/CPR and MTB 101 Skills. Choosing this option will satisfy the requirements for Professional Development at the NICA Coach License level 2. Wilderness First Aid Recertification available. Limit: 3 Coaches per team, then by waiting list with Team Director.

You will learn the progressive steps needed to teach anyone (even yourself) both basic and advanced mountain biking skills. This day covers the basics to be a Level 2 licensed Coach and includes other additional topics for veteran coaches. Learn the progressive steps needed to teach anyone the basics of mountain biking skills to add to your arsenal of coaching skills.

FREE tent camping will be allowed at Brush Creek Pavilion Park. RV and truck campers can park on the east side of Capitol Street at Brush Creek Community Gardens parking lot.
