The Colorado High School Cycling League’s coach summits bring together coaches and parent volunteers—both new and experienced—to develop skills and knowledge, share strategies, and build community. This clinic provides the professional development units (PDU) to obtain a Level 2 Coach license. The focus is to promote a safe, holistic approach to coaching that creates an environment in which young people can grow and thrive. This is a great opportunity to spend time with peers and get energized for the upcoming season.

Classes cover the nuts and bolts of working with high school student-athletes in the context of a NICA mountain bike team and provide the basic knowledge all Coaches should be aware of and incorporate into their program. The NICA coach license program is designed to ensure that all coaches are sufficiently knowledgeable so as to be a positive influence on all riders.

Coach Licensure: This clinic includes the required PDUs for Level 2 License.Team compliance for registration discount involves minimum license requirements based on the number of years in existence: Team Compliance Coach License Requirements.

Year 1 – Coach Level 1
Year 2 – Coach Level 2

Prerequisite Onboarding Training.  Required training to be completed before the Coach Summit

On the Bike Skills (OTB) 101: Learn the Skills to Teach the Skills with Andy Clark, NICA Skills Trainer, Ciclismo Youth Foundation Director, Veteran Colorado League Coach. In this clinic, coaches will learn the progressive steps needed to teach anyone (even yourself) both basic and advanced mountain biking skills. You will learn experiential teaching techniques, how to accommodate different learning styles, and how to create a positive learning environment for young riders. Most of this workshop is experiential and on the bike, so please bring your bike and appropriate riding and safety gear for the weather.

On the Bike Skills (OTB) 201: Learn the Skills to Teach the Skills with Amanda Carrey, Pro rider and NICA Coach Licensing Manager will unveil the new 201 curriculum. Learn drills and teaching skills for more advanced riders. Most of this workshop is experiential and on the bike, so please bring your bike and appropriate riding and safety gear for the weather.

Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships are available. Please submit your scholarship application by April 15th.

  • Friday evening dinner, roundtable discussion – PLEASE include on registration
  • Breakfast and lunch each day and conference materials

Limit: 3 Coaches per team, then by waiting list with League Director.

Note: Course participants will be provided with relevant materials and the NICA Coaches Manual. For those planning on participating in the skills clinic and/or optional trail ride, you must have a helmet and a functioning mountain bike. Bring a water bottle and appropriate clothes. Snacks and lunch will be provided. You will receive a confirmation email and registration form upon receipt of payment.

Saturday, April 28: Leadership, Emotional Health Awareness,  Succession Planning, and First Aid, CPR/CPR Recertification, WFA-Recert

Saturday seminars cover the nuts and bolts of working with high school student-athletes in the context of a NICA mountain bike club. Seminar topics include those requested by veteran coaches and applicable to all Head Coaches/Team Directors, Level 1-3 Coaches. The NICA coach license program is designed to ensure that all coaches are sufficiently knowledgeable so as to be a positive influence on all NICA riders.

Sunday, April 29: 1-day Level 2 Coach License with Fundraising, On the Bike Skills (OTB) 101 or 201, and First Aid, CPR/CPR Recertification, WFA-Recert 

Choosing this option will satisfy the requirements for Professional Development at the NICA Coach License level 2.  You will learn the progressive steps needed to teach anyone (even yourself) both basic and advanced mountain biking skills. This day covers the basics to be a Level 2 licensed Coach and includes other additional topics for veteran coaches. Learn the progressive steps needed to teach anyone the basics of mountain biking skills to add to your arsenal of coaching skills. NOTE: First Aid Classes do not count as Professional Development (PDUs).

  • WFA Recert, card $30 for those with 16-hr WFA certification that expired in 2017 or will expire in 2018

All CPR, First Aid, and recertification education expenses are generously provided by the 2nd Chance Fund established by Mountain Island Construction.

FREE tent camping will be allowed at Brush Creek Pavilion Park. RV and truck campers can park on the east side of Capitol Street at Brush Creek Community Gardens parking lot. 

Camping Rules:

  • No outdoor fires or cooking,
  • Use toilets for toilet activities,
  • Quiet hours starting at 9:00 PM.
